Demonoir by 1349

I was going to write this as a status update on Facebook, but I couldn't stop writing and it turned out much longer than what I can post on Facebook or anything else! So here is my blog I haven't updated in FOREVER!

It's amazing how much energy you can feel beneath lyrics of a song, or feel through a song in general... I'm listening to 1349 (one of my most favorite black metal artists). I'm reading the lyrics at the same time, which in a way, it gives their music a different experience almost while you're listening... I know Frost (drummer, also is the drummer for Satyricon) wrote the song Hellfire... Which is the one I just listened to before putting on their Demonoir album. It took me back to when I interviewed him last year in May (2010)...

Frost is an intriguing person, very deep, and there's something so captivating about him, the way he speaks, it just amazes me... It is alluring in a sense. When I first interviewed him, I asked him how does he make/write the music he does so that we who listen to his music can *FEEL* the "Hellfire" throughout the songs... He gave me an incredible & amazing answer... But... Listening to the song right now... I don't know... Maybe I've come to some revelations... Maybe some Revelations of the Black Flame? ;-)

Seriously though... Frost is the reason I love black/extreme metal so much... I will openly admit, I never was a die-hard fan of black metal, I always loved Mayhem and Immortal, just never really fully understood what the music represented, what it was truly about... I listened to it from time to time, but after I interviewed Frost, I realized that there is such a uniqueness about it that not one single other genre quite has..

Jenna and Frost May 2010The moment he said in the interview "I think that as long as I have that burning flame inside, I will be able to continue to walk that path." and I was staring into his light blue eyes, surrounded by his corpse paint as he had just got off stage, something clicked inside of me... It was like I could see through the face paint, I could see the depth within himself... All I wanted to do was keep asking him more and more questions to further understand this music.

I'm not saying I fully understand it now, but something clicked inside of me... He really is a captivating person... As many of you know, he captivated me so much in that first interview, that when they did that headline run later that year in October/November, I just HAD to interview him again. I kind of felt bad as I wanted to interview Ravn as well, but there's just something about Frost that makes you want to talk to him and know more... I can't explain it, but for those who have met him, who have interviewed him maybe, maybe they know what I'm talking about. It's an experience for sure to be talking inside a room with him, staring/standing face-to-face connecting into his eyes. He takes you on a wild ride with the way he speaks so philosophically and poetically...

It was kind of strange during that initial interview as right after he gave me that 'burning flame' answer, I kind of pushed the rest of the questions I had aside and started asking my own that just popped into my head... He kind of lured me into what he was all about and quite possibly gave me one of my best interviews ever... Both of Frost's interviews will remain in my top favorites. The first one will always have a special place in my heart as it really sparked my passion for black metal...

The second interview was so intense though, I was on the edge of my seat, I was in awe of all he was saying. The stories he was sharing with me, talking about Helvete, the record store that was in Norway that he visited, how that is where his passion began for black metal... Talking about the violence inside of that particular genre... It obviously was so amazing that I'm writing about it now.

But back to what I was saying earlier... As I'm listening to this and reading the lyrics at the same time, it's so intense, because they're so incredibly powerful and have such a deep energy beneath. I'm not a Satanist or anything remotely close to that, but within that song, Hellfire, he TRULY makes you FEEL the Hellfire.

I believe that is part of what music stands for, letting you just feel the way it's written, the way it's composed; letting you feel the iciness, the depth, the fire, all of which to get lost in for those few minutes that song remains on... Music, no matter what, heals, it's a powerful and amazing thing. And I am so thankful that I get to talk to and interview these artists and further understand heavy metal and its subgenres on a different level that I never would have ever expected to ever come close to knowing...
